How many ways are there to set a nail? That may seem like a silly question, because the answer is so obvious, you either use a hammer, or a pneumatic nail gun.
Standard hammers come in a wide varity of styles, weights and grip materials. These hammers haven’t really changed over the past 100 years. The only problem with these is that you need room to swing the hammer, and after several hours of work, you find muscles in your arm that you may not have been aware of.
Pneumatic nail guns on the other hand, do not have these issues. To use these all you have to do is hold it in place and pull the trigger, and the nail is set. The down side of these nail guns is that an air compressor and hose are required. An option to the Pneumatic nail gun is a gas powered nail gun. These use replaceable gas charges to fire the nail. Like the Pneumatic nail gun, these nail guns are easy to use. The down side is the cost of the gas charges. There may also be a safety issues involved when the gas powered nail gun is used in the home or around a an open flame.
These were our only options up till now. Sears recently added the NEXTEC Hammer to their NEXTEC product line. Like the other products in this product line the NEXTEC Hammer is powered by a rechargable 12 Volt
Diehard Lithium battery.
To use the Hammer, insert the nail into the head of the hammer, put it in to place and pull the trigger. The head is at a 90 degree angle from the trigger, so it will work in tight places. Specification data for the hammer claim that it will handle nails up to 2.5”.
The NEXTEC Hammer comes with a case and charger for the battery, the kit sells for around $100.00 at Sears or sears.com
So the next question should be; should this NEXTEC hammer be added to your tool box. If you are like me, and have several pneumatic nail guns and a good air compressors, then maybe not. The only advantage to me is that they would work in tighter places that I can not get the nail guns into. If, however, you don’t already own a nail gun, then yes, I would add this to my tool kit. This is one of those tools that you will not use every day, but when you need it, it maybe the only thing that will work.
