Home Improvement – Ladders

I was cleaning up my shop the other day, putting things back where they really belong, and in the process I realized that I had somehow accumulated 5 different sizes or styles. Wow, five ladders. So I started to think about how it was that I came to have that many.

And somehow that got me to thinking about how much ladder technol0gy has changed in recent years. I remember the ladder that my Dad had, heavy, wooden and man did it ever shake when you climbed it. It was ok, if you only used the first couple of steps, but beyond that it became an experience that wasn’t always pleasant.

All of the ladders in my shop happen to be made out of fiberglass, which is much lighter then the wooden ladders of yore. They are also much more stable. And since fiberglass will not conduct electricity, I prefer them over the other option which is aluminum. The one negative factor about fiberglass ladders is the weight. They are significantly heavier then their aluminum cousins.

untitled Home Improvement Ladders When it comes to aluminum ladders, the old adage” you get what you pay for” is absolutely correct. The standard aluminum ladder from the DIY stores is lightweight, and not very stable. There is, however, one exception to that trend, the aluminum ladders from Little Giant.

The Little Giant is designed to be the safest ladder on the planet. Since it’s adjustable, the Little Giant can be used safely on stairs, ramps, curbs, docks or other uneven surfaces. And with the new patented triple-locking hinge, the Little Giant Ladder is sturdier than ever in the extended position. The Little Giant is made of heavy-wall, 6005-T5 aluminum, the very same material used in aerospace construction. So it’s ultra-strong while remaining light and portable. In fact, The Little Giant Type 1A is government-rated to hold up to 300 pounds, but has survived brutal stress testing of up to 1200 pounds with absolutely no structural failure.
The Little Giant is so well designed that I have considered adding one to my collection of ladders, or for that matter, I may even consider replacing the lot. That is if I can find a home for the five I already have.
